IE Tower, the futuristic 180-meter high university
António Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations
At 180 meters high, the building has 35 floors and covers an area of 50,000 square meters and a capacity of 6,000 students, making it the third tallest educational building in the world. The IE Tower is the fifth skyscraper in Madrid Nuevo Norte, currently the largest urbanization project in Europe.
Reflecting IE's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, António Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations, recognized the IE Tower as "a symbol of the critical importance of education in today's rapidly changing world. It will be a home for world-class learning, cutting-edge ideas and practical answers to the many challenges facing humanity."
140 nationalities in a futuristic and innovative setting
The new campus will provide students with a unique experience alongside students of more than 140 nationalities in an innovative and futuristic setting.
It features technology immersion, virtual reality and artificial intelligence spaces, 64 classrooms with flexible configurations and 30 unique spaces that encourage interaction, innovation and creativity. It also features open spaces to promote social and cultural life, as well as an Olympic-size swimming pool and state-of-the-art sports facilities.
This inauguration event, which marked a real turning point in the history of the University, counted among its most important guests Vinton Cerf, considered one of the fathers of the Internet, Daniel Goleman, psychologist, journalist and author of the best-seller Emotional Intelligence, as well as tennis player Rafael Nadal.
Anti-Covid Building
Like the rest of the University's buildings, which have remained continuously open since June 2020 thanks to exceptional sanitation protocols, the IE Tower is an "anti-covid" building. Every room in the skyscraper is equipped with air filtration and ventilation systems. It is a center of innovation and sustainability not only for academic research, but also for the use of cutting-edge technologies for the university's practical needs. For example, students access the institute through facial recognition and move between floors through 20 "smart" elevators, capable of recirculating the energy needed to go up and down.
The tower was built to the highest standards of sustainability and energy efficiency, thinking about the efficient use of light, heat and waste.
As Lee Newman, the new dean of the Business School, said, the tower aims to be part of a university that "aims to transform people."
Martha Thorne, dean of the IE School of Architecture & Design and chair of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize, said: "This inauguration marks a beginning. The presence of IE University adds a great element of diversity to the city of Madrid and the IE Tower will have a positive impact on the personality, economy and culture of the region."
